16 Locks occur in one and a quarter mile below Marple Lime Works. The boats carry 25 Tons, which are built at Marple, and when new have cost £140 each. The places of the Marple Locks, were at first supplied by a steep rail-way, or inclined-plane for Trams, from 1797 to 1806.
From a description of the Locks in 1814.
