03/24/11 at 20:49Rev. John Jones was dissatisfied by the Anglican Church and became a private Chaplain for Jane & Mary Done of Utkinton Hall who had inherited the Puritan principles of their father (Mary Done, in 1636, married John, second son of Sir Randle Crew). John Jones also went with them when they were removed to Harden Hall to reside with their sister.
John Jones later lived in Marple where he had been asked to preach in the original Marple Chapel. He was a nonconformist of the Congregational persuasion and preached in several Chapels in Marple until 1660 where he preached at Mellor Chapel. Due to his nonconformity he was met with much opposition and later forced to preach from his own house. He was later seized and imprisoned at Chester. He died in Manchester in August 1671, age 72. |
