Samuel Oldknow bought the Bottoms Hall estate in 1787 from Thomas Cheetham of Middlesex for £1,625. The Mill was built on the Mellor side of the river Goyt between 1790 and 1792, and up to 285 people were employed in its construction.
The original painting by J Parry was from 1803, possibly earlier.
