At Mellor Mill, Oldknow worked his apprentices for long hours but fed them lavishly with porridge and bacon for breakfast, meat every day for dinner, puddings or pies on alternate days and all the fruit in the orchard was eaten by children. Samuel Oldknow regarded the provision of wholesome food to his workers as a duty, dissociated from any idea of profit.
